Hardanger Rom & Harmonium in Herand
In Herand you can experience both nature and culture from the Hardanger region, in a nutshell. The landscape shows that it has been cultivated for over thousands of years. There is an exhibition where you can learn about the history of Herand back to the last Ice Age until the last century. There are traces from all periods in the history, from early settlements under the overhanging rocks, 9000 years ago, unique rock carvings from the Bronze Age and a boat house location and grave findings from the Iron Age. The cultivated landscape has been formed by old agricultural traditions. The export of timber and the building of wooden boats have been important industries here, combined with small scale farming and growing fruit. In spring, by the end of May, you can enjoy the fantastic view of all the flowering fruit trees. Driving between Utne and Jondal at that time is an unforgettable and breath-taking experience. Later in the season, in August/September, when all the slopes are filled with fully ripe fruit, it’s like entering a fairy tale.
Herand is a unique starting point for shorter or longer trips in the mountains, as well as for other activities. We’ll gladly prepare a package for 4+ persons to enable you to experience in a couple of days the essence of what the area has to offer. Things like mountain walking, visiting museums, (guided) fishing tours, skiing on the glacier, guided tours on the glacier, picking fruit/berries in the autumn and making jam/cakes, just let us have your thoughts and wishes and we’ll work out a plan. And if the weather is good, a paddling tour on the fjord in our siton-top kayaks is an unforgettable experience as well.
Hardanger Rom & Harmonium is a B&B in our own house. Arjen has his harmonium/reed organ workshop in the basement (and welcomes everyone with genuine interest), we live on the first floor together with our friendly cat “Lillepus”, whereas the second and third floor are for our guests. Marna is taking care of the most regarding the rooms and the breakfast. There is a fully equipped shared kitchen as well, if you would like to make your own meals. Nearby you’ll find a pizza restaurant (open during the summer months). The local grocery shop is selling ready cooked traditional Norwegian dinners as well and there is a restaurant in Jondal (14 km). Do you like to barbeque? There is one available at our terrace.
Since Herand is a rural village, travelling by car is the easiest. For guidance and good advice about travelling in the western part of Norway, have a look at our website.
Our beautiful village Herand is like a pearl in the region, where both the fjord and the landscape will enable you to find peace and harmony, with both relaxing and activities at sea and on land. We speak/understand both Norwegian, Dutch, English, German, a bit of French and Frisian.
Your hosts Arjen L.H. Stolk & Marna Roer would love to welcome you soon!
