MEET THE PEOPLE!
Experience Norwegian culture and learn about daily life, past and present. The Open-Air Museum shows history and local culture from our various regions. Historic buildings are re-erected as typical farmsteads with encircling fields or as city dwellings with cobblestone streets and backyards.
The magnificent wooden Stave Church was built in the 13th century, and has been moved from its original site in the village of Gol.
The museum comes alive through a wide variety of activities. Hosts in traditional costumes welcome you into the houses and livestock graze the fields. Folk music and dance, handicraft and a taste of traditional baking enhances the experience.
Comprehensive exhibits feature national treasures and artifacts such as wood carving, rose painting, alter pieces, Sámi handicraft and folk dress with silver jewelry.
The museum is well set up for group visits lasting from 15 minutes to two hours. It is open all year, with and emphasis on summer and the annual Christmas Fair for the activities in the Open-Air Museum.
