There is an old saying that if you took everything about Trøndelag out of the Norwegian history books, you would only have the covers left. The region is, in fact, bursting with tradition: rockcarvings, battlefields, fortresses and old churches all tell the tale of those who came before. Many key events in Norwegian history took place here.

It was at the major historic site of Stiklestad, in Northern Trøndelag, that King Olav Haraldsson − later St. Olav − fell in battle on 29 July in the year 1030, during his crusade to bring Christianity to Norway. Olav was buried by the river at Nidaros, as Trondheim was then called, in Southern Trøndelag. A year later, he was declared a saint. The Nidaros Cathedral is an intriguing architectural mixture of late Romanesque, Gothic and Normanstyles and influences.

With its beautiful coastline and numerous national parks, outdoora ctivities plays a central role in Trøndelag. Fishing is among the most popular activities: the region offers outstanding conditions for salmon fishing, fjord and deep-sea fishing.
